My gear (2023 update).
I mainly shoot with a Sony A7RIII. This camera is just a beast with its awesome 42.4 Mpx sensor (my previous Mark 1 was already 36.4 Mpx) which makes it the perfect Camera for Landscape Photography and delivers a very high level in picture quality. It is also very good for detailed Wildlife photos, even if this is not the quickest camera of the Sony’s lineup, but the IBIS (in body stabilisation) is also a VERY nice feature versus my previous experience with the A7R Mark 1 (no blur whatsoever in speedy action scenes).
As I was a Canon user some years ago and I have still some very decent lenses from this time (first of all with the Tamron 24-70mm f/2,8 which is incredibly sharp), I still use a Sigma MC-11 adapter to make these lenses compatible with my Sony camera. My comment on the compatibility from the previous “My gear” blog post from 2018 doesn’t apply anymore as the MC-11 is now really reliable thanks to consistent updates of its firware by Sigma. I’m also still using the Metabones Smart Adapter (Mark V) from time to time, but I feel the Sigma works much better overall and stopped the AF problems I used to have with Canon compatible lenses.
Since 2018 I equiped myself with some very solid lenses to adapt with Wildlife photography. First I bought a native Sony lense with the Sony OSS G Macro FE 90 mm F2.8 which is amazing in all situation and sharp as hell (and also very good for portrait photography). An amazing lense for taking pictures of fauna and flora from close. The second lense I bought (much more recently) is a Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary (Canon mount), which is fully compatible with the MC-11 adapter and works with pretty much all AF modes from my Sony camera. This one is also a great choice and much more affordable than the Sony equivalent which is probably an excellent lense, but so, so, expensive…
I still have the same smartphone compared to 2018 and still use my Samsung Galaxy S9+ daily. That’s easily one of the best purchases I ever done all in all. The gap between this one and my previous Huawei P9 is phenomenal in terms of picture quality, video capabilities and reliability. The battery management of the Galaxy S9+ is also one of the best features of the phone, and the quality of its display is also fantastic. A very very good photophone if you don’t have your DSLR with you.
